Infrastructure

The NMR Lab for liquid samples comprises a 500 MHz (11.7 Tesla) Bruker Avance DRX NMR spectrometer equipped with broad band probes (inverse with z-gradients and direct) and a 250 MHz (5.8 Tesla) Bruker Avance III NMR spectrometer equipped with dual 1H/13C probes (inverse with z-gradients and direct). Routine experiments involve observation of 1H, 13C, 15N, 31P and 19F nuclei. Α variety of sophisticated experiments may be run to address specific inquiries. Data processing is carried out by a set of computers employing Topspin software. The infrastructure is complemented by an air compressor system and an individualized, stand-alone Helium gas recovery system.

The NMR Lab is located at building #19 room #20 of NCSR “Demokritos”, and operates as a Service Facility with specific operation rules and pricing.

Access & service provision

The NMR Lab has been offering research services since 2001 in the spectral analysis of liquid samples. It provides access to trained scientists and students of NCSR “Demokritos” and has simultaneously evolved into an advanced and reliable laboratory that supplies services to third parties, namely private companies seeking solutions on specific problems or academic institutions seeking high resolution data. The services provided have potential applications in the Pharmaceutical, Chemical and Food sectors, examples being:

  • Structure elucidation of specific additives/contaminants/pollutants
  • Quantitative analysis (chemical composition determination, formulation investigation, raw material fingerprinting, mixture analysis, sample purity determination)
  • Compound identification/ confirmation of presence in mixtures
  • Identification and conformational analysis of chemicals – synthetic or natural
  • Characterization of soluble materials (e.g. polymers)
  • Monitoring of compound stability /investigation of chemical transformations with time or temperature
