The Electron Microscopy Laboratory of the NCSR “Demokritos” was established in 1987. It hosts 2 of the Centre’s Electron Microscopes: A) an FEI CM 20 analytical High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) equipped with an EDAX Electron Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) system and a GIF200 Gatan imaging filter for Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS) and Energy Filtered TEM (EFTEM) and B) a variable pressure FEI Quanta Inspect Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM) equipped with an EDAX EDS system. Within 2018 a new FEG-S/TEM with superior capabilities will be installed.
It also hosts a large variety of sample preparation tools (ion mill, electropolisher, dimpler, disc grinders, metal coater, ultrasonic cutter etc) suitable for a large range of materials and structures: metals, semiconductors, ceramics and composite materials, in bulk, thin film and powder forms. Its mission is to conduct high-end research in materials science using electron microscopy methods. It is collaborating with research teams not only in NCSR “Demokritos”, but also in Greece and the rest of the world. It also provides services to the public and the private sector.  It hosts expertise in a large variety of areas such as microelectronics, magnetic recording/spintronics, drug delivery, porous materials, (photo) catalysts, photovoltaics, optoelectronics; its the main industrial partners come from the cement industry, pharmaceuticals, metallurgy and oil companies. With its main funding coming from competitive national and EU funds, the Laboratory has participated in 23 projects.
