The target and focus of the proposal is to fabricate novel carbyne films with radical sensing properties, fully characterize their properties and demonstrate their use as radical chemical sensors and biosensors. For the achievement of such innovative and of wide spectrum goals, an international consortium of devoted members with complementary and of cutting-edge know-how in the individual research domains, was formed.

Russian research team will focus on the synthesis and characterization of this new class of materials.

The other teams will focus on implementation of these films for sensor applications paving the way for unprecedented sensor performance of these totally unexplored materials.

We foresee a tremendous impact of this work. First of all the synthesis methods and the properties of carbyne films will mature and stabilize. Recipes, allowing the synthesis and coating of surfaces will be developed and surface properties will be known. Thus, this new class of thin films will be characterized in detail for the first time.

Second, surface modification of carbyne films will be done by dry plasma processing, allowing a broad range of properties of this carbon allotrope to be explored.

Third, a new class of ultraminiaturized gas sensors with carbine as sensing layers will be designed and implemented and explored for their potential for higher sensitivity and selectivity for selected gases and VOCs with paramount importance for our daily life.

Finally a new class of bacteria detection devices will be designed based on nanowire coated microfluidics containing coated carbyne films the hardest material on Earth. This will be extremely important for public health, safety early prognosis and prevention of outbreaks.
