Ms. Giorgia Giacometti achieved her Master’s Degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology in March 2014 at the University of Bologna (Italy) with an experimental thesis under the supervision of Dr. Carla Ferreri (BioFreeRadicals Group), at the Institute for Organic Synthesis and Photoreactivity (ISOF) of the National Research Centre (CNR) in Bologna. Her project was focused on the cis-trans isomerization induced by sulfur centered radicals on DHA (omega-3 fatty acid), also using liposomes as membrane models. She gained expertise in synthesis and analysis of trans fatty acid isomers, lipidomics of biological samples (blood) for biomarker discovery and lipid content analysis of commercially available products (eg. nutraceuticals and functional foods).
She continued at Dr. Ferreri’s lab for her post-graduate internship (April-October 2014) in the frame of a collaboration with the Laboratory Val Sambro Ltd (Bologna), involving hyperspectral enhanced dark-field microscopy (Cytoviva) applied to the differentiation of blood cell membranes (erythrocytes and granulocytes) in healthy and unhealthy conditions.
She is currently enrolled as PhD student in Pharmacology and Toxicology, Human Development and Movement Sciences, with a joint project between the Institute DIMES of “Alma Mater Studiorum” of Bologna and the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (INN) of the National Center for Scientific Research (N.C.S.R.) “Demokritos”, Athens (Greece) in the frame of the H2020 European Training Network “ClickGene” under the supervision of Dr. Chryssostomos Chatgilialoglu (Free Radicals in Bio- and Nano-Technology Group). She will be involved in nanocarrier development for antitumoral gene silencing therapies.
