ABOUT/BIOGRAPHY

Iakovos Gavalas is an affiliated research member of the Ceramics and Composite Materials Group at the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (INN), NCSR Demokritos. He holds a BSc in Materials Science from the University of Crete and two MSc degrees: Materials Engineering from the University of Ioannina and Biomedical Engineering from the  University of Crete.

He has R&D experience in advanced materials for additive manufacturing, with a consistent record of contribution in the authorship and implementation of European research projects. His previous work and research activities included materials formulation for additive manufacturing, electrospinning of nano/micro-fibers, materials characterization, design and 3D printing of microfluidic devices as well as patient-specific 3D printing from medical images (CT/MRI).

Since January 2024, he has been part of the CCM Research Group, contributing to National and EU proposal preparation, R&D activites on additive manufacturing and printability assessment of ceramics and cementitious materials, alongside materials characterization. With expertise in Materials Science, Materials Characterization and Additive Manufacturing, his role in the CCM Group lies on the development and characterization of advanced materials, including:

  1. 3D Printable innovative composite materials for application in cultural heritage and infrastructure.
  2. Innovative composite capsules enabling induced self-healing in concrete under the EU-funded "SINCERE" project.

In addition, he provides CAD designing and FEA support towards the prototyping, testing, and optimization process of research components and systems.
