ABOUT/BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Ioannis Bratsos graduated from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA, Greece), obtaining the BSc Degree of Chemistry in 2000. From the same university he received his MSc (2003) and PhD (2005) in Bioinorganic Chemistry. From 2005 to 2011 he worked at the University of Trieste (Department of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Italy) as Postdoctoral Researcher. In 2012 he moved back to Athens and he joined the lab of Chemical Biology of Natural Products and Designed Molecules at the Institute of Physical Chemistry (IPC), NCSR “Demokritos”, as research assistant. In 2021, he was elected Researcher C' in the INN, NCSR "Demokritos" and since then he is the head of the Laboratory of Functional Inorganic and Hybrid NanoStructures (FIHNS Lab).

His research interests and experience are focused mainly on the field of Inorganic Synthetic Chemistry with applications in health, energy and environment. In particular, his current research is divided in two lines:

  • Development of functional coordination/organometallic compounds that due to their chemical-physical properties or reactivity can act their own for various applications (e.g. metal based drugs), or can be exploited in other more complex systems (e.g. linkers for the construction of MOFs).
  • Development of novel inorganic/organic hybrid crystalline nanomaterials (e.g. Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs), Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks (ZIFs), etc) for biomedical, environmental, energy and industrial applications.

His work has led to the publication of 36 peer-reviewed articles in highly respected international journals, he is the co-author of a chapter in a book entitled “Bioinorganic Medicinal Chemistry", and co-inventor of an Italian patent dealing with novel ruthenium complexes as potential antitumor agents. At a recent count (Scopus 12/2021), he had 1514 citations and an h-index factor of 22. In addition, he has attended more than 20 international and national conferences, in which he gave 7 oral presentations and presented more than 10 posters. He has also been appointed by several international publishers, including Elsevier, American Chemical Society, Royal Society of Chemistry etc, to serve as referee to scientific articles, and evaluator of an international scientific project (New Zealand).

During his research career he visited top-level European laboratories and worked with well-recognized experts, which gave him the opportunity to establish a broad network of collaborations. In addition, he has been involved in 9 European and National research projects. Ioannis has supervised several undergraduate and postgraduate students and has been the co-advisor of three undergraduate theses and three MSc dissertations
