The GRAPHITE Project is related to the recycling of graphite waste into high-technology products, in accordance with the principles of the circular economy. The project will be implemented with the goal of developing innovative and sustainable technologies for the production of highly competitive products at the European and global level, such as silicon carbide (SiC) and graphene nanomaterials. SiC is a material with exceptional properties suitable for use in highly demanding environments (high temperatures, corrosion, friction, etc.), such as in the fields of energy, metal production, catalysis, and aerospace engineering.
Graphene is likewise an innovative material with unique properties that make it ideal for both large-scale and specialized applications, including energy systems, electronic technologies, and medical applications.

The project will be carried out in the Region of Attica, through the collaboration of two of Greece’s leading research institutions — the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos” — together with an SME, CARBONTEC E.E., which has long experience in producing graphite-based products for specialized technological applications.

CARBONTEC E.E. is a continuously growing and outward-looking company with significant clients in Europe and the USA across high-technology sectors, and it seeks to expand its activities into other high value-added products within the non-metallic materials industry.

The results of the project can be utilized not only by the participating SME but also by other SMEs at the national and European level, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of this strategically important SME sector for the Greek and European economy and society, through the targeted strengthening of both established and emerging economic activities.
