The large and increasing need for genetic analyses worldwide, with application in clinical diagnostics and safety, has enhanced the requirements of genetic testing methods, which traditionally are time-consuming, require specialized personnel and consequently are of high cost. The progress achieved in this project is expected to overcome all the disadvantages of existing standard methods and allow the widespread and cost-efficient use of genetic testing, even in private clinics and doctor offices, based on novel integrated systems (point-of-care, PoC). In such PoC systems for patient medical care, the requirements for short treatment times and small size of the instruments are highly desired. In this project, the group developed microfluidic devices for DNA amplification, which (in collaboration with the “Circuits and devices” group) were integrated with capacitive biosensors into LoC devices for detection of amplified DNA. In particular, flexible printed circuit and printed circuit board (PCB) technology was implemented, for the first time in the literature, for the fabrication of continuous flow PCR microdevices with integrated resistive microheaters for ultrafast and power efficient DNA amplification
