ABOUT/BIOGRAPHY
Dimitris Tsiourvas was born in 1962 in Larissa, Greece. He studied Chemical Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens (1984) and obtained his PhD (NTUA, Chemical Engineering School, 1992) working in the area of polymeric liquid crystals under the supervision of Dr C. M. Paleos in NCSR “Demokritos”. He worked in the plastics processing industry ARGO SA, Greece (1988-1995), and then joined the Institute of Physical Chemistry of NCSR “Demokritos” in 1995 as a Researcher. He is head of the laboratory of Functional Nanomaterials of Organized Structure
(2007-today). He is the co-author of more than 120 publications in peer-reviewed journals and of 2 books chapters, co-inventor of 4 international and 6 national patents and has participated in 11 European and 12 Greek research projects. He is currently an editorial board member in Pharmaceuticals (ISSN 1424-8247). His current research interests mainly include synthetic and physicochemical aspects of liposomes, dendrimers, carbon dots and hybrid organic/inorganic nanomaterials for specific applications, including:
- Preparation and characterization of liposomes and their application as drug carriers
- Functionalization and characterization of dendritic polymers and their application as controlled release and targeted drug delivery systems
- Preparation, functionalization and characterization of carbon dots and their application as imaging agents of cancerous cells
- Synthesis of hybrid organic/inorganic nanoparticles based on an environmentally friendly biomimetic processes employing dendritic polymers
- 3D nanohydroxyapatite/biopolymer scaffolds of complex geometries for bone tissue engineering applications
- Superhydrophobic and oleophobic fluorinated silica nanoparticles and their application as surface coatings
- Synthesis and characterization of liquid crystals and liquid crystal/nanoparticle composites
