ABOUT/BIOGRAPHY
Sotirios Fragkos is a PhD student of the department of Mechanical Engineering, University of West Attica, since 2019, with dissertation title “On topological properties of materials: Topological insulators, Weyl and Dirac semimetals” in collaboration with the Epitaxy and Surface Science Laboratory (ESSL) within the framework of EU Horizon 2020 “SKYTOP” project, coordinated by National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos”.
He received his BSc degree on Mechanical Engineering in 2017, from the Technological Educational Institute of Piraeus, Greece. For his undergraduate thesis, he studied “On electronic band structure of 2D
materials, combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT)” in collaboration with ESSL.
Since 2017, he is a member of the ESSL, headed by Dr Athanasios Dimoulas, of the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology of NCSR "Demokritos".
His main interests focus on the theoretical study of magnetic-skyrmionic materials by DFT and atomistic-spin simulations, Topological Insulators, Weyl and Dirac semimetals and 2D Materials by first-principles calculations and their experimental characterization by ARPES. He has also participated in synchrotron ARPES beamlines (e.g., SOLEIL-Paris, ALS-Berkeley) and (co)authored publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and participated in international scientific conferences.
