DATE:2-09-2024

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Anastasios (Tasos) Travlos former Research Director and Head of the Electron Microscopy and Nanomaterials Lab of INN.

Tasos was born on the island of Kefalonia in 1955. He studied Physics at Queen Mary College, London, and he received an M.Sc. degree in the Physics of Semiconductors from Brunel University, London and his Ph.D from Imperial College, University of London, in 1984. He joined “Demokritos” in 1987 and established the Electron Microscopy laboratory. Under his guidance the lab expanded extensively becoming one of the main microscopy research facilities of INN and of the country. His research interests included MBE and nanomaterials growth, electron microscopy characterization of materials, optical and electrical properties of materials and thin films with applications in micro- & opto-electronics. As a long-term researcher, Dr. Travlos has contributed to the high-quality scientific output and prestige of “Demokritos” for many years. He was also a pioneer in applying scientific knowledge to address societal needs, a prominent example being the “asbestos issue” in the early 1990s. He also founded the company Plinios S.A. environmental consultants in 2005, one of the first spin-off companies of “Demokritos”.

Dr Travlos, a highly respected colleague, will be remembered for his dedication, focus and intuition, in his work, always ready to share his knowledge and assist where needed. An example to all with a vision to the future of science and progress.

Let this be a living tribute to his memory, we will sorely miss him.

We express our deepest condolences to his family.
