ABOUT/BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Alexandros Banis is a metallurgical engineer with a strong background in the study and characterization of metallic materials. He graduated from the School of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) in 2016 and completed his Ph.D. in 2021. His doctoral research was recognized with the ‘Iakovos Gkiourounlian’ award for the best thesis of industrial interest in the faculty in 2021.
From 2021 to 2023, Dr. Banis worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Ghent University, contributing to a European RFCS project and teaching courses on ‘Metal Processing and Technology’ and ‘Micro-analysis and Structure Determination in Materials Science.’ Since 2024, he has been continuing his research as a postdoctoral researcher at the Electron Microscopy and Nanomaterials Laboratory of the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (INN).
Dr. Banis focuses on the characterization of metallic materials, including steel, aluminum, nickel, titanium, copper, and their alloys. His work covers areas such as crystallography, physical metallurgy, phase transformations, and mechanical properties of metals. He has experience with various characterization techniques, including Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM, STEM, HR-TEM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD, t-EBSD), X-ray diffraction (XRD), tensile testing, and hardness and micro-hardness testing.
He is a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece, the Hellenic Metallurgical Society, and the Hellenic Microscopy Society, while acting as a reviewer for several scientific journals. Alongside his research, he teaches courses on ‘Welding Technology’ and ‘Casting, Solidification, and Metal Forming’ at NTUA.
