Microalgae and cyanobacteria are microorganisms that are well known for their role in global CO2 and nitrogen fixation. Carbon dioxide emission from fossil fuels combustion is generally accepted that has a significant contribution to the global climate change. Microalgae including cyanobacteria can provide a sustainable platform for the photosynthetic production and recovery of high value bioactive and biochemical products derived from microalgae biomass. Utilization of CO2 from gas pollutants as carbon source for microalgae growth can have a large positive environmental impact.

CO2-BioProducts is a multi-disciplinary project, in which participate partners from three Greek Universities and there research institutes as well as the biggest power producer and electricity supply company in Greece (Public Power Corporation S.A.) and a spirulina producer company (ALGAE A.C.). The CO2-BioProducts project focuses on the exploitation of biomass derived from selected microalgae species via the development of an integrated multi-product generation process. Main objective is the production of high-added value bioproducts through the bioconversion of available CO2 -from power generation plants - using microalgae.

NCSR “Demokritos” group focus on the development of advanced methods for the extraction and determination of selected bioactive compounds from microalgae/cyanobacteria biomass.

The project is co‐financed by the European Union and Greek national funds through the Operational Program Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship and Innovation (NSRF 2014-2020), under the call RESEARCH – CREATE - INNOVATE (project code: Τ1ΕΔΚ-02681). Group budget 100k€. Principal Investigator: Dr. T. Triantis
