The present project (ΗλιοΚεραμος) aims to the development, for industrial production, of a new type of multifunctional roof-tile with a photovoltaic system of organic solar cells (OSC) for energy production, embedded on its surface. The roof-tile will be redesigned by maintaining its traditional form in order to accommodate the OSCs and the microsctructure will be modified in order to decrease its thermal conductivity without much change in mechanical properties. The surface area where the OSC will be incorporated, will be covered with a borosilicate glaze, on top of which the photovoltaic will be placed. The latter will be based on transparent conductive oxides, acting as electrodes and organic semiconductors as active components. The process will include treatment of the OSC surface towards the achievement of hyper-hydrophobicity. The successful implementation of ΗλιοΚεραμος will result in the production of a solar roof-tile, which can replace the traditional ones  without altering the morphology and the appearance of the existing buildings, including the traditional ones. At the same time the roof-tile will present advanced thermal insulation properties and will be an energy producer though the integration (incorporation) of the organic solar cells. Solar roof-tile will bridge the gap between the traditional roofing and new technology and its manufacture will not only strengthen the ceramics industry in the markets, but it will also shield a sector which is in danger to be considered nowadays as outdated.
