The objectives of the MICROPROTEIN project were to develop techniques and processes for micrometer scale patterning of protein and DNA arrays for the next biochip generation. Three different techniques were developed and tested that are largely bio molecule and substrate independent:

a. The development of biocompatible photo patterning methodologies including polymeric photo resists with adequate characteristics

b. The development of processes and materials compatible with the use of laser ablation for micropatterning

c. The development of methods and materials for patterning by low-voltage electrowetting micro-spotting.

The contribution of the group to this project was focused on objective c, that is the development of electrowetting as a method for biofluid transport in droplet-based (digital) microfluidics
