Novel 2D Nanocrystals for Smart Coatings Applications
The "2D NanoSmart" project aims to develop novel 2D materials, MXenes, with excellent properties for their application in smart, functional coatings. The project is carried out with financial support from "Stavros Niarchos" Foundation through collaboration between NCSR "Demokritos" and NanoPhos SA combining the research fields of materials science and nanotechnology. Novel MXenes nanocrystals as well as composites containing MXenes were synthesized and characterized in order to be integrated in suitable matrices used by NanoPhos SA. Paints for shielding against electromagnetic radiation, as well as suspensions for photocatalytic and antibacterial coatings with low content of active ingredients were created. Thin and light weight coatings were suitable for deposition on flexible surfaces of various shapes and sizes. The coatings target a large portion of users due to their environmentally friendly and highly competitive application procedure on both new and existing operating surfaces.
