PARTIAL-PGMs proposes an integrate, multidisciplinary approach for the rational design of smart and innovative nanostructured  materials for automotive after-treatment systems, capable to anticipate future standard regulations, but also to face significant breakthrough related the development of new combustion modes associated to stratified combustion of spark-ignition engines. More specific the  consortium will determine the feasibility of Gasoline Particulate Filters (GPFs) which contain both viable 3-way catalyst (TWC) and gasoline particulate oxidation functionality using either purely base metal components or with much lower loaded noble metals (PGMs) contain than the current state-of-the-art, aiming at replacing the 1st generation GPFs.

The use of novel nano-technology approaches will allow for a reduction in PGMs content, more than 30%, through the minimization of the noble metals content by enhancing their catalytic properties. Additionally, replacement of noble metals will be obtained by the incorporation of low cost transition metal nanoparticlesThe coherent approach proposed by PARTIAL-PGMs covers multidimensional aspects, including, multi-scale modeling, synthesis and characterization of advanced nanomaterials, process optimisation as well as LCA, recyclability studies and health assessment. The present project will focus on the fine-tuning of several factors related to the preparation of the 2nd generation of GPFs, their characterization and their performance evaluation under realistic conditions.PGMs, which are considered as ‘at risk’ or as ‘critical’ materials, are fundamental to Europe's economy, and they are essential for maintaining and improving our quality of life. Therefore, their substitution is of high economic, political and societal importance. PARTIAL-PGMs aims to address these issues, strengthening the R&D efforts in the field, promoting the PGMs resource efficiency and maintaining the EU leadership in automotive industry.
