This project develops the necessary technologies to monitor pesticides from greenhouse down to the consumer so that pesticide exposure to the targeted pests is maximized while human pesticide exposure is minimized. This holistic approach necessitates monitoring of pesticide using materials and technologies to obtain both real time information of pesticide concentration in the greenhouse ambient environment as well as on the crops. To address the challenge of pesticide monitoring the project develops a wireless sensor network which includes electronic chemical microsensors for remote measurements so that the environmental conditions in the greenhouse, including the pesticide concentration, are continuously monitored. The measurement of the concentration of pesticides in the greenhouse air then, acts as a means of warning (alarm) of high concentration of pesticides in order to safeguard the workers. The results of the project contribute both to safety during the production of plant products as well as to foods free from residues of chemical plant protection substances.
