The DIAMOND project addresses the challenges of timely and rapid diagnosis of microbial infections by means of detection of their genetic material (DNA) and the restricted use of antibiotics only where necessary. This will be achieved with the development of a prototype of an automated, portable diagnostic system, based on a lab-on-a-chip where bacterial DNA amplification is carried out efficiently and rapidly, as well as the detection of the amplified DNA on sensitive biosensors based on graphene oxide. This novel lab-on-a-chip (LoC) is of reduced cost, as it is fabricated on printed circuit boards (PCB), exploiting mass production methods available at the PCB industry. The LOC is inserted in a user-friendly, portable instrument which allows automated i) sample handling, ii) temperature control necessary for biological reactions to occur, iii) sensor readout, and iv) data acquisition and processing. The instrument is accompanied by a novel web application for processing, storage and display of the analysis results, used for monitoring of the infection spreading in space and time.
