ABOUT/BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Alexandros Banis is a metallurgical engineer with a strong background in the study and characterization of metallic materials. He graduated from the School of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) in 2016 and completed his Ph.D. in 2021. His doctoral research was recognized with the ‘Iakovos Gkiourounlian’ award for the best thesis of industrial interest in the faculty in 2021.
From 2021 to 2023, Dr. Banis worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Ghent University, contributing to a European RFCS project and teaching courses on ‘Metal Processing and Technology’ and ‘Micro-analysis and Structure Determination in Materials Science.’ During this time, he worked on the microstructure/properties engineering of low-density steels with application in the automotive industry.
Since 2024, he has been continuing his research as a postdoctoral researcher at the Electron Microscopy and Nanomaterials Laboratory of the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (INN). There, he has gained experience with the characterization of a wide range of materials, including medicine, 2D materials - perovskites, nanoparticles for photovoltaics and aerogels, etc. He has also been awarded a Seal of Excellence from the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions for his proposal MAGSTEEL: “Development of Strong and Ductile Steel for Soft Magnetic Applications for Efficient Energy Conversion”.
Dr. Banis focuses on the characterization of metallic materials, including steel, aluminum, nickel, titanium, copper, and their alloys. His work covers areas such as crystallography, physical metallurgy, phase transformations, and mechanical properties of metals. He has experience with various characterization techniques, including Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM, STEM, HR-TEM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD, t-EBSD), X-ray diffraction (XRD), tensile testing, and hardness and micro-hardness testing. He is also experienced in sample preparation techniques and thermal treatments.
He is a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece, the Hellenic Metallurgical Society, and the Hellenic Microscopy Society, while acting as a reviewer for several scientific journals. Alongside his research, he has teaching experience, acting as a teaching assistant in Ghent University, delivering courses on Metal Processing and Technology, Micro-analysis and Structure Determination in Materials Science, Microstructure-Property Control of Metals, and in the NTUA, assisting in the courses of ‘Welding Technology’ and ‘Casting, Solidification, and Metal Forming’. He has also participated in the ‘SkiComCu-Lifelong Learning Course for skills & competences in the Copper Sector' project, funded by the EIT Raw Materials.
