Self-cleaning coatings for glass

We fabricate and characterise TiO- based coatings for the development of self cleaing coatings on glass surfaces for use in Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plants. With the use of magnetron sputtered coatings we work on the optimization of the optical and structural properties (thickness, roughness, composition) of our layers for this specific application. Durability and transparency of our layers is our main goal, as CSP systems may be subjected to extremely harsh conditions (dessert sand, salt) in areas where clean water is scarce. In collaboration with other INN groups we focus on the development of the superhydrophilic approach for self cleaning.

Contact angle measurement of magnetron-sputtered TiO2; we deposit also layers at with zero contact angle (not shown here)
