ABOUT
The Photonic Devices and Systems Group at the Institute of Nanoscience & Nanotechnology (INN), NCSR "Demokritos," is dedicated to advancing micro- and nanotechnology with a focus on photonic devices and systems. The group, includes Dr. Nikos Papanikolaou, Dr. I. Raptis, Dr. E. Makarona and Dr. K. Misiakos (emeritus), collaborates with a network of researchers and organizations to drive innovation in the field. Throughout the years, the group has developed expertise in designing and fabricating integrated photonic systems that address pressing challenges in fields such as healthcare, biodiangostics, environmental monitoring, and defense. Working within the well-equipped facility of INN, the group takes a comprehensive approach, handling every stage of development—from initial concept and fundamental aspects of photonic principles to final system testing—ensuring precision and efficiency throughout the process.
Collaboration is a cornerstone of the group’s activities, involving partnerships with researchers and organizations across academia and industry. Their research spans silicon-based photonic sensors, lab-on-a-chip systems, and high-performance plasmonic and metasurface technologies. Supported by advanced cleanroom infrastructure and techniques, the group strives to develop innovative, practical solutions that are both sustainable and cost-effective.
Through projects such as monolithic photonic biosensors for diagnostics and spectroscopic chips for food safety, the Photonic Devices and Systems Group combines foundational research with real-world applications. This balance of exploration and practical impact reflects the group’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of photonics while addressing societal needs.
